The Annual Memorial Day Sunrise Ceremony will begin at 6:30 a.m. on Monday, May 27th at the Columbia County Memorial Wall behind the Evans Library. The event is free and the public is invited. The tentative itinerary is as follows:
o National Anthem
o Columbia County Commission Chairman Doug Duncan
o Keynote speaker: Lt Col Edward Shelor, USMC Retired *
o Memorial Wreath placement by Commissioners
o Lowering of the U.S. Flag to half-staff by Columbia County Fire Department accompanied by the playing of “Taps” by bugler, Will Rich
o Closing remarks and dismissal
It is anticipated that the entire event will last a total of about 30 minutes. This is a rain or shine event!
*Lt Col Edward is currently a special assistant to Congressman Hice (GA-10), a former Political Science professor and a U.S. Marine. He served as a Signals Intelligence/Cryptologic Officer in numerous locations including South Korea; Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and at the National Security Agency. He also served at the Office of Naval Intelligence as the Director of the Geospatial Imagery Division in Washington, D.C. Lt Col Shelor completed the US Army Airborne School at Ft. Benning, GA and among his many awards are the Navy Commendation medal and the Defense Meritorious Service medal awarded by the NSA. He is a member of the Society of Military Historians, The World History Association and the Georgia Historical Society.
